Services Provided
Our complete ophthalmic examinations identify abnormal ocular conditions, and we utilize state of the art ophthalmic, surgical and anesthetic equipment to diagnose and treat eye problems. When an underlying systemic problem is identified, the Ophthalmology department is able to work with the other specialty practices at Las Vegas Veterinary Specialty Center to appropriately treat our patients.

William Weinstein, DVM, MS, DACVO
Dr. Weinstein is a board certified veterinary ophthalmologist and a member of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists.
Dr. Weinstein completed his residency in ophthalmology at the University of Georgia, College of Veterinary Medicine in Athens, Georgia in 2009, where he also earned a Master of Science degree in veterinary pathology. His research and publications involve canine glaucoma and identification of molecular factors (matrix netalloprotienases) associated with the disease.
Dr. Weinstein was also involved in research on new therapies for treatment of equine fungal keratitis. He completed a medicine and surgical internship at Long Island Veterinary Specialists in 2005. He earned his DVM from St. George’s University, School of Veterinary Medicine in 2003 and holds bachelor’s degrees in biology and veterinary technology.
Ophthalmic examination services provided at LVVSC include:
- CERF Examinations
- CT and MRI of the eye and orbit
- Electroretinography (ERG)
- Gonioscopy
- Ocular biopsies
- Retinoscopy and indirect and direct retinal examination
- Slit lamp biomicroscopy
- Ultrasonagraphy of the eye and orbit
Ophthalmic surgical procedures provided at LVVSC include:
- Cataract surgery (phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implant)
- Conjunctival and corneal grafting
- Cryosurgery (for distichea, ectopic cilia and ocular neoplasia)
- Enucleations
- Eyelid reconstruction surgeries
- Intraocular prosthesis placement
- Keratectomies
- Laser surgery (for glaucoma, ocular neoplasia and retinopexy)
- Repair of prolapsed third eyelids
Follow-Up Care
After any ophthalmic procedure or surgery, our patients are monitored by doctors and technicians in our ICU, which allows for excellent post-procedure pain management and medical treatment and monitoring. Our hospital is fully staffed 24 hours a day with both doctors and technicians.
Owners are educated on proper nursing care for their animal’s eye condition prior to going home, including detailed discharge instructions and a schedule of recheck examinations. We also communicate regularly with the primary veterinarian throughout the treatment process.
We realize that ocular conditions can be overwhelming, especially when affecting vision. We are always available to answer any questions, both from clients and referring veterinarians.
Appointments
Appointments are by referral Monday through Friday. Ophthalmologic emergencies can be seen through the Ophthalmology department during those times, or through Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care at any time.
